Frilled Dragon Care topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
The frilled dragon (Chlamydosaurus kingii) is a large Australian agamid lizard best known for its dramatic neck frill, which can span 30 cm when fully extended. Adults reach 60--90 cm (24--36 inches), with males considerably larger than females. They require tall enclosures with strong UVB lighting, high basking temperatures, and elevated perching -- husbandry that differs significantly from more commonly kept lizards.

Enclosure Height Matters as Much as Floor Space
Frilled dragons are arboreal -- in the wild they spend the majority of their time 2--5 meters above ground. A minimum enclosure of 4 feet tall x 3 feet wide x 2 feet deep is recommended for a single adult. Larger is always better for a lizard that can reach 36 inches. Screen or mesh panels on multiple sides provide ventilation and allow climbing. Cork rounds, bamboo branches (at least 2 inches in diameter for adult grip), and sturdy platform shelves create a three-dimensional climbing environment. Ground space matters less than vertical height and climbing complexity.
Basking Temperatures Exceed Most Other Lizards
Basking surface temperatures should reach 115--125 degrees F (46--52 degrees C) directly under the basking lamp. This is higher than bearded dragons (110--115 degrees F) and reflects the extreme Australian heat of their natural range. Ambient temperature should be 85--90 degrees F on the warm side and 75--80 degrees F on the cool side. Night temperatures should not drop below 68 degrees F. A ceramic heat emitter or radiant heat panel can maintain nighttime temperatures without light disruption. Temperature measurement with an infrared thermometer gun (not analog thermometers) is essential for accuracy at these precise ranges.
UVB Requirements Are Among the Highest in Captive Lizards
Wild frilled dragons receive intense direct sun in open woodland. Ferguson Zone 4 reptiles, they require UVI (UV index) of 4--6 in the basking zone. This translates to a high-output T5 HO UVB tube (10.0 or 12%) positioned 6--10 inches from the basking site. Arcadia 12% or Exo Terra Reptile UVB 150 positioned correctly produces appropriate UVI readings when measured with a Solarmeter 6.5. Tubes must be replaced every 6 months regardless of visible light output -- UV emission declines before the tube burns out. Metabolic bone disease from UVB deficiency is the most common preventable disease in captive frilled dragons.
Diet Requires Live Feeder Insects and Small Vertebrates
Frilled dragons are opportunistic carnivores. Adults consume large feeder insects (Dubia roaches, hornworms, superworms, large crickets), pinkies or fuzzies monthly as an occasional supplement, and small lizards in captivity if available. Insects must be gut-loaded 24--48 hours before feeding and dusted with calcium + D3 powder at every feeding. Supplementing with a multivitamin powder twice monthly addresses micronutrient needs. Feeding frequency: juveniles daily, adults 3--4 times per week. Obesity from overfeeding is a common problem -- adults are satiated after 5--8 large roaches per feeding session.
Humidity and Hydration Are Frequently Neglected
Frilled dragons come from seasonally humid Australian woodland. Relative humidity of 60--80% is appropriate, achieved through daily misting of enclosure walls and plants. Many individuals refuse standing water bowls and drink exclusively from water droplets on surfaces -- daily misting of the enclosure and providing a dripper system encourages drinking. Dehydration signs include sunken eyes, wrinkled skin over the flanks, and retained shed (dysecdysis). Soaking in 1--2 inches of lukewarm water for 15 minutes, 2--3 times weekly, assists hydration and shedding in chronically dehydrated animals.
The Frill Display Is a Stress Signal, Not Entertainment
The frill deploys in response to perceived threat. A frilled dragon that constantly displays its frill in captivity is chronically stressed -- typically from inadequate hide options, excessive handling, incorrect temperatures, or a reflection it interprets as a rival. A well-acclimated, secure frilled dragon rarely fans its frill unprompted. Frill displays during initial handling are normal and diminish with gradual trust-building over weeks to months.
