Jackson's Chameleon topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
Jackson's chameleons (Trioceros jacksonii) are East African chameleons best known for the male's three prominent facial horns (resembling a miniature Triceratops) and for being among the hardiest and most commonly recommended chameleon species for intermediate keepers. Unlike most chameleons that lay eggs, Jackson's are viviparous (live-bearing) -- females give birth to 8--30 live young after a 5--7 month gestation. Their highland origins mean they prefer cooler temperatures than veiled or panther chameleons, which is a common point of husbandry failure.

Temperature Is Their Biggest Departure From Typical Chameleon Care
Jackson's chameleons originate from the cool, mist-shrouded highlands of Kenya and Tanzania at elevations of 1,500--3,000 meters. Their preferred temperature range is 65--80 degrees F ambient, with a basking spot of 85--88 degrees F. They do not do well when temperatures consistently exceed 85 degrees F ambient -- chronic heat causes immune suppression, anorexia, and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. In many regions of the US, a Jackson's can be kept in a ventilated outdoor enclosure during spring and fall and moved indoors to an air-conditioned space in summer. This temperature requirement is the primary reason Jackson's are considered less appropriate than veiled chameleons in hot climates without climate-controlled housing.
Humidity Cycling Mirrors Their Highland Mist Zone Environment
Wild Jackson's experience morning mist, a drier midday, and possible afternoon mist or rainfall. Replicating this cycle -- misting heavily once or twice daily, allowing the enclosure to dry between sessions -- provides drinking water (chameleons drink water droplets off leaves, not from bowls), maintains appropriate humidity (50--80%), and allows the ventilation needed to prevent respiratory infections from stagnant humid air. Screen enclosures provide ventilation but dry out too rapidly in low-humidity climates; hybrid enclosures (glass sides with large screen panels) maintain humidity better while retaining airflow.
Males Cannot Be Housed Together
Male Jackson's chameleons are highly territorial and will fight when housed together, using their horns to ram rivals off branches. Visual sight lines between males in separate enclosures can also cause chronic stress -- males that can see each other may stress-display for hours, leading to immune suppression and anorexia. Housing males in visual isolation (enclosures not facing each other, separated by opaque barriers) is required in multi-chameleon households.
Feeding Requires Gut-Loaded, Properly Sized Insects
Jackson's chameleons are insectivores. Diet: dubia roaches, crickets, hornworms, silkworms, and the occasional waxworm as a high-fat treat. Prey size should not exceed the width of the chameleon's head. All feeders must be gut-loaded 24 hours before offering (leafy greens, commercial gut-load). Calcium + D3 powder is dusted on every other feeding; a multivitamin powder once weekly. UVB exposure (5% T5 HO tube, 6--8 hours daily) allows natural D3 synthesis and reduces reliance on supplement D3. Chameleons that stop eating should be evaluated by an avian/exotic vet; anorexia lasting more than 5--7 days in an otherwise active chameleon warrants investigation.
Viviparous Birth Requires Preparation in Bred Females
If a female Jackson's is bred or co-housed with a male, birth preparation is required: a 6-8 inch deep laying area with moistened substrate for the female to rest during the birth process (though birth doesn't require digging like oviparous species). Neonates are 3--4 cm long and require separate housing immediately after birth to prevent sibling aggression and to allow careful monitoring of feeding. Neonate food consists of tiny crickets (1/8 inch) gut-loaded similarly to adult feeders. Mortality in the first 30 days is high without correct temperature, humidity, and prey size management.
