Ball pythons reach 3-5 feet as adults, with females larger than males. They are thick-bodied, muscular snakes that are satisfying to handle -- heavy, slow-moving, and docile when properly acclimated. Kenyan sand boas (Eryx colubrinus) reach 15-30 inches, with females significantly larger than males (males rarely exceed 18 inches). They are compact and easier to control but have a more active, head-first burrowing behavior that can feel frantic compared to the settled demeanor of a resting ball python. Kenyan sand boas tolerate handling well but often spend the entire session trying to burrow -- some owners find this charming; others find it frustrating.

Husbandry Difficulty

Ball pythons require a temperature gradient of 88-92 degrees F (31-33 C) on the warm side (basking), 78-80 degrees F (25.5-27 C) on the cool side, and ambient humidity of 60-80%. Getting humidity right is the main challenge -- too dry leads to incomplete sheds and respiratory infections; too wet leads to scale rot and respiratory infections. Maintaining humidity in screen-top enclosures requires covering most of the top. Kenyan sand boas are more forgiving: warm side 90-95 degrees F (32-35 C), cool side 75-80 degrees F (24-27 C), humidity 30-50% -- much easier to achieve in most homes without specialized equipment. Both species need thermostat-controlled heat sources.

Feeding Reliability

Kenyan sand boas are voracious feeders. They almost never refuse food, rarely go on extended feeding strikes, and feeding responses are strong from hatchling age. Ball pythons are notoriously finicky. Adult ball pythons routinely refuse food for weeks to months during breeding season (fall and winter), when humidity is off, when they feel insecure, after handling, after a cage rearrangement, or for no discernible reason at all. A ball python not eating for 4-6 weeks with no weight loss is probably fine; one not eating for 2+ months with weight loss warrants a vet visit. New owners frequently panic at ball python feeding strikes. If reliable eating is important to you, the sand boa wins.

Display Value

Ball pythons are better display animals. They can be seen in bioactive enclosures, they emerge more often, and their docility during handling means more interactive time. Kenyan sand boas are almost entirely fossorial -- they spend 90-95% of their time buried. A KSB enclosure from above looks like empty substrate with an occasional snake visible at the glass edge. If you want a snake you can watch and handle regularly, ball pythons are more rewarding on that axis.

Morph Availability and Cost

Ball pythons have an extraordinary morph market -- over 4,000 documented genetic combinations. Hatchling ball pythons range from $50 (normal) to tens of thousands of dollars (rare combination morphs). Budget ball pythons are widely available. Kenyan sand boas have a growing morph market (albino, anerythristic, nuclear) but a smaller selection and slightly higher base prices for common morphs. Both species are widely captive-bred; wild-caught specimens of either species should be avoided due to parasite loads and stress-related health problems.
