Leopard Gecko Care topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.

If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.

Enclosure Setup

Leopard geckos are terrestrial (ground-dwelling), so floor space matters more than height. Minimum enclosure: 20 gallons (30 x 12 inches floor space) for one gecko. A 40-gallon breeder tank (36 x 18 inches) is strongly preferred and accommodates a gecko comfortably for life.

Temperature gradient (critical): Leopard geckos are ectotherms that thermoregulate by moving between temperature zones.

  • Hot side (basking area): 88–92Β°F surface temperature. Under-tank heater (UTH) or radiant heat panel provides belly heat, which is important for digestion.
  • Warm side ambient: 80–85Β°F
  • Cool side ambient: 75–80Β°F
  • Nighttime temperatures: can drop to 65–70Β°F; below 60Β°F causes metabolic suppression

Use a thermostat with any heat source β€” an unregulated UTH can cook a gecko pressed against it. Digital thermometer with a probe for surface temperature (infrared temp guns are convenient and accurate for spot-checking).

Lighting: Leopard geckos are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk) and do not require UV lighting to survive, but recent research suggests they benefit from low-level UVB (Ferguson Zone 1 UVB, 2–5 UVI) for vitamin D3 synthesis and behavioral enrichment. If not providing UVB, supplement D3 in the dust (see feeding section). Provide a normal light/dark cycle (12 hours each) from room light alone if not using a dedicated bulb.

Substrate:

  • Safe: Paper towels, reptile carpet, ceramic tile, slate, bioactive substrate (topsoil + play sand mix 70/30)
  • Unsafe: Loose particle substrates (sand, calci-sand, crushed walnut, bark chips) for geckos under 16 weeks or geckos with any health issue. Adult geckos on bioactive soil/sand mixes do fine; all loose substrate carries some impaction risk in sick or juveniles.

Hides: Minimum three hides: hot side hide, cool side hide, and a humid hide (moss-lined) for shedding. The humid hide is essential β€” without adequate humidity during shed, retained shed skin constricts toes and the tail, causing necrosis and loss.

Feeding Leopard Geckos

Leopard geckos are obligate insectivores. They do not eat plant matter. Feeder insects:

  • Crickets: Good staple. Must be gut-loaded (fed nutritious food 24–48 hours before feeding to the gecko). Noisy; escape from enclosures.
  • Dubia roaches: Better nutritional profile than crickets, cannot climb smooth surfaces, quiet. Cannot breed in temperatures under 85Β°F, so escaped roaches do not establish colonies in most homes. Excellent staple.
  • Mealworms: Acceptable variety; high in fat. Do not use as the sole food. Superworms (Zophobas morio) are better nutritionally but should be limited due to fat content.
  • Waxworms: Treat only (extremely high fat). Geckos become addicted and may refuse other feeders if waxworms are offered frequently.

Feeding schedule: Juveniles (under 6 months): daily. Sub-adults (6–18 months): every other day. Adults (18+ months): every 2–3 days. Feed appropriately sized insects β€” no wider than the space between the gecko’s eyes.

Dusting: Dust all feeder insects with calcium + D3 powder at every feeding if no UVB lighting. With adequate UVB, dust with calcium without D3 most feedings and with D3 once weekly. Multivitamin powder (Repashy or similar) once every 1–2 weeks.

Always provide a small dish of pure calcium powder in the enclosure β€” geckos will self-supplement if deficient.

Water and Humidity

Fresh water in a shallow dish, changed daily. Leopard geckos drink from bowls and occasional misting of the enclosure walls. Ambient humidity: 30–40%. The humid hide maintains a local humidity pocket for shedding without raising whole-enclosure humidity. Humidity over 60% promotes respiratory infection in leopard geckos.

Common Health Issues

  • Metabolic bone disease (MBD): Calcium/D3 deficiency. Soft, rubbery jaw, limb tremors, difficulty lifting the body off the ground, spontaneous fractures. Completely preventable with proper supplementation. Treatment: calcium gluconate and vitamin D3 supplementation under vet guidance; severe cases require hospitalization.
  • Retained shed (dysecdysis): Stuck shed on toes, eyelids, or tail. Cause: insufficient humidity during shed. Treatment: warm water soaks (5–10 minutes in shallow 85Β°F water), then gentle removal with damp cotton. Constricted toes lose circulation and fall off β€” act quickly on retained digital shed.
  • Crypto (Cryptosporidium varanii): GI parasite causing progressive weight loss, wasting, and death. No cure. Infected geckos must be humanely euthanized. Highly contagious between geckos. Never share equipment between geckos without sterilization.
  • Impaction: Ingested substrate causes intestinal blockage. Signs: no fecal output for 1+ weeks, lethargy, distended abdomen. Prevention: appropriate substrate. Treatment: warm water soak, olive oil orally, vet intervention if not resolved.
  • Tail loss (autotomy): Leopard geckos can drop their tails as a defense mechanism. The tail regrows over 2–3 months as a rounded, fatty stub (not the original shape). Not a health emergency, but address any predator or handling-stress trigger that caused it.

Handling

Leopard geckos tame easily with gentle, consistent handling. Start with 5–10 minute sessions after the first week of acclimation. Support the full body when holding. Never grab by the tail β€” autotomy is reflexive and irreversible. Most leopard geckos become very tolerant of handling and some seek interaction. Wash hands before and after handling to protect both you and the gecko.
