The Foundational Mutations
Most leopard gecko morphs derive from a small set of core mutations. Amelanotic (RAPTOR, Albino lines): removes black pigment. Three unrelated albino strains exist -- Tremper, Bell, and Rainwater -- and they are not interchangeable genetically. Crossing two different albino strains produces wild-type offspring, not albinos. Blizzard: patternless, uniform coloration. Eclipse: solid black eyes. Enigma: irregular, busy patterning with a neurological side effect.
The Enigma Syndrome Problem
The Enigma morph carries a neurological condition called Enigma Syndrome (ES): head wobbling, star-gazing (neck bent upward), circling, and difficulty locating food. Severity varies from mild to debilitating. The gene is dominant -- every Enigma gecko is affected to some degree. Ethical breeders have moved away from producing Enigmas, but they remain common in the trade. Before buying an Enigma, watch feeding videos; a gecko that can't reliably strike prey will require hand-feeding or force-feeding long-term.
Reading Morph Names
Compound morph names describe the combination of mutations present. A RAPTOR (Red-eyed Albino Patternless Tremper Orange) combines the Tremper albino, Eclipse (red eyes), and Patternless genes. A Super Hypo Tangerine Carrot Tail (SHTCT) is a line-bred morph -- no single gene, just generations of selecting for reduced spotting and orange coloration. Line-bred morphs don't follow predictable Mendelian ratios.
Health Considerations by Morph
White and Yellow (W&Y) and other morphs with high white coloration can develop neurological symptoms similar to Enigma. Blizzard morphs occasionally have visual issues. Any morph produced from multiple recessive combinations may have reduced fitness compared to wild-type. The safest morphs health-wise are standard Hypos, Tangerines, and High Yellows -- heavy selection for single traits with no known neurological associations.
