Species for Beginners
The thumbnail frogs (Ranitomeya and Dendrobates species) are tiny and have complex social structures requiring research. For beginners, the best starting species are Dendrobates auratus (Green and Black Dart Frog, 1.5 inches), Dendrobates leucomelas (Yellow-Banded Dart Frog, 1.5 inches), and Phyllobates terribilis -- the Golden Poison Frog, largest and least aggressive of the commonly kept species. All three are commonly available as captive-bred, reasonably hardy, and active observers through glass.
Avoid wild-caught dart frogs: they carry parasites, do not adapt well to captivity, and the collection pressure on wild populations is a conservation concern.
Vivarium Setup
Dart frogs thrive in bioactive vivariums: a glass-front enclosure with a drainage layer (LECA balls), substrate divider, and a mix of coconut fiber and organic topsoil as planting medium. Live tropical plants (bromeliads, pothos, philodendron, moss) provide microclimates, hiding spots, and egg-laying sites. Ventilation through screen top panels maintains airflow while humidity stays at 80--100%. Temperature: 72--80 degrees F for most species; avoid prolonged temperatures above 82 degrees F.
Bioactive setups self-maintain through the isopod/springtail cleanup crew (microarthropods that consume waste and maintain substrate health). Add a colony of tropical springtails and isopods (dwarf whites work well) when setting up the vivarium.
Feeding
Dart frogs eat exclusively live micro-prey: fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster for small frogs; D. hydei for medium frogs), springtails, small crickets, and bean beetles. Fruit fly cultures are maintained at home -- starter cultures are available from dart frog suppliers. Mixing Species
Most dart frog species cannot be mixed. They compete for territory, stress each other, and can interbreed producing non-viable or sterile hybrids that compromise captive population genetics.
