A Snake Built for Life Underground
Sand boas are fossorial -- they evolved to hunt by burying themselves up to their eyes and ambushing lizards and small rodents passing overhead. In captivity, this instinct persists. A sand boa without adequate burrowing substrate will pace enclosure walls chronically, which signals stress. Provide coconut fiber, aspen shavings, or a 50/50 mix of play sand and topsoil at a depth of 3--4 inches minimum.
Adults are comfortable in a 20-gallon enclosure (30 x 12 x 12 inches). Despite being small snakes, they need horizontal floor space more than height -- they rarely climb. Juveniles can be housed in a 5--10 gallon or an appropriately sized tub system.
Temperature and Humidity Requirements
Maintain a thermal gradient with a warm side of 88--92 degrees F and a cool side of 72--78 degrees F. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 68--72 degrees F without harm. Use an under-tank heater on a thermostat -- sand boas bask thermally through belly contact with warm substrate, not via overhead basking. A basking lamp is unnecessary and can cause thermal burns if substrate depth is insufficient.
Humidity should stay low: 30--40% ambient. Higher humidity in a dry-adapted species causes respiratory infections and scale rot. The exception is the hide used during shed, where a slightly moister patch (50--60%) helps facilitate clean sheds. Dysecdysis (incomplete shed) in sand boas is almost always a humidity problem.
Feeding Protocol
Kenyan sand boas are enthusiastic feeders. Juveniles eat appropriately-sized pinky or fuzzy mice every 5--7 days. Adults (18 months and older) eat one adult mouse every 7--10 days. Feed prey that is no wider than the widest part of the snake's body. Always use pre-killed or frozen-thawed prey -- live prey can bite and injure a buried snake that cannot easily escape.
Feed in the enclosure or a separate feeding container. Sand boas have a strike-and-wrap response; they will bite and constrict food items. Feeding tongs are recommended to avoid mistaken strikes on hands that smell of prey. Fasting periods of 2--4 weeks are normal in winter months even without a deliberate brumation cycle.
Handling and Temperament
Sand boas are among the most handleable pet snakes. They rarely bite when approached correctly and typically respond to handling by exploring rather than fleeing. Their primary defense is burying -- given no substrate to hide in, most sand boas become calm within seconds. Allow juveniles to settle into their enclosure for 5--7 days before first handling. After feeding, wait 48 hours before handling to prevent regurgitation.
Males typically become restless and stop eating during breeding season (October--February), which is normal. Do not mistake seasonal fasting for illness.
Common Health Issues
Respiratory infections present as wheezing, mucus around the nostrils, or open-mouth breathing -- usually caused by humidity above 60% combined with cool temperatures. Mites appear as tiny moving specks on the snake or in water dishes; treat with a veterinarian-recommended product and replace all substrate. Scale rot (brown, soft lesions on ventral scales) results from damp substrate and requires veterinary debridement in advanced cases. Any snake that refuses food for more than 6 weeks outside a normal winter fast, shows neurological signs such as stargazing, or has visible respiratory symptoms should be evaluated by a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
