Tortoise and Turtle Hibernation topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
Hibernation (more accurately called brumation in reptiles -- a physiologically different state from mammalian hibernation) is the extended period of reduced metabolism, activity, and food intake that many temperate tortoise and turtle species undergo during cold months. For species that naturally brumate (box turtles, European tortoises, map turtles), skipping brumation by keeping them warm year-round may contribute to reproductive problems and shortened lifespan in some species. For tropical species (sulcata tortoises, red-eared sliders in tropical populations), forced hibernation can be fatal. The first rule of chelonian brumation: know your species.

Species That Require Brumation
Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni), Russian tortoises (Agrionemys horsfieldii), Greek tortoises (Testudo graeca), and North American box turtles (Terrapene species) evolved in regions with cold winters and require or strongly benefit from brumation periods of 3 to 4 months. Eastern box turtles in the wild brumate from October to April in most of their range; captive box turtles kept at consistent warm temperatures year-round often develop reproductive cycles that are irregular and sometimes fail to produce viable eggs.
Pre-Brumation Health Check
A tortoise or turtle that enters brumation in poor health may not survive it. The decreased metabolic rate means reduced immune function and inability to fight infections. Before brumation: (1) ensure the animal has been eating and has healthy weight -- visible hip bone protrusion, shell-to-weight ratio (Jackson Ratio for Hermann's) in low range, or body condition score below ideal indicates inadequate fat reserves; (2) last feed should be 4 to 6 weeks before intended brumation start to empty the GI tract -- undigested food ferments in a cold, slow gut; (3) weigh the animal and record weight; (4) veterinary exam annually or bi-annually before brumation to check for respiratory disease, parasites, and general health.
Methods: Box/Refrigerator vs. Outdoor Pit
The refrigerator method gives the most control for tortoises in unpredictable climates. Use a dedicated refrigerator set to 37 to 47 degrees F (3 to 8 degrees C), a wooden box filled with topsoil or a mix of topsoil and coir fiber, and weigh weekly. Check for activity (a tortoise that wakes and moves around in the refrigerator may need more insulation or a slightly cooler setting) and signs of illness. A tortoise that repeatedly attempts to wake during brumation should be brought out and allowed to warm up gradually; forced brumation of an unhealthy animal is dangerous.
Outdoor hibernation works well in climates with stable, predictable cold winters. The burrow or pile must insulate against frost penetration; temperatures must stay above 32 degrees F at the hibernation depth. In climates with erratic freeze-thaw cycles, outdoor hibernation creates the highest risk of freezing.
Weight Loss and Duration
Expect 1 to 3% body weight loss per month during brumation from water loss alone; 10 to 15% total weight loss over a 4-month brumation is within normal range. Losses exceeding 15 to 20% indicate dehydration and potential illness; bring the animal out early and offer water soaks and food. Normal brumation duration: 2 to 4 months for most temperate species. Rewarming after brumation should be gradual -- over 1 to 2 weeks -- before offering food; the digestive system needs time to reactivate fully.
