The Green Nose Problem and How to Prevent It
"Green nose syndrome" is the common name for rostral abrasions -- wounds on the nose and snout from water dragons repeatedly running full-speed into glass walls. It's called green nose because the nose turns green from algae colonizing the abraded tissue. Left untreated, it progresses to serious infections that can reach bone. It is one of the most common husbandry injuries in water dragons, and it's almost entirely preventable.
Prevention: cover the lower 12-18 inches of glass walls with an opaque background or frosted film -- the dragon doesn't run into what it can't see as a continuation of space. A well-planted, densely furnished enclosure that breaks up sightlines also reduces the "open runway" effect that triggers the behavior. Any water dragon with visible rostral wounds needs veterinary care promptly -- the infection risk is serious enough that a wait-and-see approach is not appropriate.
The Pool Is Not Optional
Chinese water dragons are semi-aquatic in the wild -- they live near streams and rivers and escape predators by diving and swimming. In captivity, access to a pool deep enough to fully submerge is required for behavioral and physiological reasons. Dragons use the pool to thermoregulate, to defecate (a natural behavior that simplifies enclosure cleaning), and to rehydrate through skin absorption. Pool minimum: large enough for the dragon to turn around in, deep enough to submerge, with a ramp exit. Change water 2-3 times per week or filter continuously.

Do not feed water dragons primarily iceberg lettuce, fruit, or low-nutrition produce -- this is a protein-needing insectivore, not an herbivore.
