How to Care for a Baby Bird: From Hand-Feeding to Fledging
A baby bird is not a smaller version of an adult β it is a completely different animal with a digestive system that can fail in hours, a body that cannot regulate its own temperature, and a beak that will sample everything in reach. Hand-raising a chick means becoming its crop, its thermostat, its immune system, and its first teacher. The margin for error is measured in degrees of formula temperature and hours between feedings. Get the fundamentals right, and you raise a healthy, confident bird. Get them wrong, and the consequences arrive fast.

Should you hand-raise a baby bird or let the parents do it?
Hand-raising a baby bird is one of the most demanding tasks an aviculturist can undertake, and the decision to do it should never be made lightly. Parent-raised chicks benefit from natural feeding rhythms, immune factors transferred through the parents' crop milk and saliva, and the behavioral modeling that shapes a psychologically healthy adult bird. Hand-raised babies, by contrast, depend entirely on a human caregiver to replicate every aspect of that process β temperature, nutrition, hygiene, and socialization β and mistakes in any one area can be fatal within hours (Clubb, 2001).
The common belief that hand-raised babies make better pets has a kernel of truth but also a significant caveat. Hand-raised birds do tend to be more comfortable with human handling and less fearful of novel situations, which makes them easier to place in pet homes. However, birds that are hand-raised exclusively by humans and never exposed to conspecifics can develop behavioral problems later in life, including sexual imprinting on humans, inappropriate aggression during breeding season, and difficulty reading social signals from other birds (Luescher, 2006). The best outcomes often come from co-parenting β allowing the chick to be fed by its parents for the first two to three weeks, then introducing supplemental human handling.
For orphaned wild baby birds, the calculus is different. In the United States, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it illegal for unlicensed individuals to possess most native bird species. Only pigeons, European starlings, and house sparrows are exempt. Any other wild baby bird should go to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as quickly as possible (USFWS, 2023).
How much and how often should you feed a baby bird?
The volume and frequency of hand-feeding are not matters of guesswork β they are calculated from the chick's body weight and the species' expected growth rate. A general guideline is to feed approximately 10 percent of the chick's body weight per feeding, but this varies by species, age, and individual appetite. The crop, a thin-walled esophageal pouch visible on the right side of the neck, should be palpated before every feeding. A crop that has not emptied within four to six hours of the last meal signals a problem β crop stasis β and the next feeding should be withheld until the crop clears (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024).
Very young chicks, those under one week of age, may need feeding every two to three hours around the clock. As the chick grows, the interval stretches to every four hours, and by the time the bird is three to four weeks old, most species can manage on four feedings per day with a six-hour overnight break. The overnight fast is not a convenience for the caregiver β it is physiologically important. The crop needs time to empty completely at least once every 24 hours, and a chick that is fed continuously without a break is at high risk for sour crop, a condition in which stagnant food ferments and produces toxins (Doneley, 2016).
Weighing the chick on a gram scale at the same time every morning, before the first feeding, is the single most reliable way to track progress. A chick that fails to gain weight for two consecutive days, or that loses weight, needs a veterinary evaluation regardless of how normal it looks. Weight stasis in a growing chick is never benign.
What temperature should hand-feeding formula be, and why does it matter?
Formula temperature is one of the most common causes of preventable chick mortality. Commercial hand-rearing formulas must be mixed with water heated to between 105 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit β roughly the body temperature of the parent bird's crop. Formula that is too cool, below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, slows crop emptying and increases the risk of bacterial overgrowth and sour crop. Formula that is too hot, above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, can cause crop burn, a thermal injury to the delicate crop mucosa that can perforate the crop wall and lead to a life-threatening infection or fistula (Harcourt-Brown, 2000).
The temperature must be checked with a reliable digital thermometer β not a finger, not a wrist, not a guess. The formula should be stirred thoroughly after heating to eliminate hot spots, and the temperature should be rechecked immediately before feeding. Microwave heating is particularly dangerous because it creates uneven heating; a water bath or a dedicated formula warmer is safer. The mixed formula should be the consistency of a thin pudding or applesauce β thick enough to hold together in the crop but thin enough to pass easily through the feeding syringe or spoon (Doneley, 2016).
Fresh formula must be mixed for each feeding. Leftover formula that has been sitting at room temperature for more than two hours is a bacterial growth medium, and refrigerated formula that is reheated carries the same risk. The small cost of discarding unused formula is trivial compared with the cost of treating a chick with bacterial enteritis or systemic infection.

What feeding techniques work best β spoon or syringe?
Two primary hand-feeding methods are used in aviculture: spoon-feeding and syringe-feeding. Spoon-feeding involves bending the sides of a small metal spoon upward to form a narrow trough, then offering the warm formula to the chick, which pumps its head up and down in a natural feeding response. This method is slower and messier, but it gives the chick more control over the rate of intake and reduces the risk of aspiration β formula entering the trachea instead of the esophagus (Clubb, 2001).
Syringe-feeding, using a catheter-tipped syringe without a needle, is faster and more precise, which makes it the preferred method in large aviaries and breeding facilities. The syringe tip is placed into the left side of the chick's mouth β the chick's right side β and directed toward the right side of the throat, where the esophagus opens. The plunger is depressed slowly, allowing the chick to swallow between boluses. Feeding too quickly, or directing the formula toward the center of the throat where the glottis opens, can cause aspiration pneumonia, which is often fatal in young chicks (Harcourt-Brown, 2000).
Regardless of the method, the feeding session should end when the crop feels full but not tight β like a soft, slightly firm balloon. Overfilling stretches the crop wall, impairs motility, and can cause regurgitation. After feeding, the chick's beak and facial feathers should be wiped clean with a warm, damp cloth to prevent formula from drying and hardening on the skin, which can cause dermatitis and feather follicle damage.
What is sour crop and how do you prevent it?
Sour crop, also called crop stasis or ingluvitis, is one of the most feared complications of hand-rearing. It occurs when food sits in the crop for too long without being digested and moved into the proventriculus. The stagnant contents ferment, producing gas and organic acids, and the crop wall becomes inflamed and atonic β it loses the ability to contract. The chick's crop feels doughy or fluid-filled hours after the last feeding, and the bird may regurgitate foul-smelling liquid when handled (Doneley, 2016).
The causes of sour crop are multifactorial. Formula that is too cool slows crop motility. Overfeeding stretches the crop and impairs its contractile function. Feeding before the crop has emptied from the previous meal compounds the problem. Bacterial or yeast overgrowth β particularly Candida species β can colonize a sluggish crop and make the stasis self-perpetuating. Dehydration, chilling, and systemic illness all reduce gut motility and predispose a chick to crop stasis (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024).
Treatment is an emergency. The crop must be emptied β gently, by massaging the contents upward and aspirating with a catheter β and flushed with warm saline. The chick needs subcutaneous or intravenous fluids, broad-spectrum antifungals and antibiotics as indicated by cytology, and a period of gut rest with small, frequent feedings of an electrolyte solution before formula is reintroduced. A chick with advanced sour crop can die within 24 to 48 hours of the first signs, so any delay in seeking veterinary care is dangerous.
What happens during the fledgling period and how do you keep a young bird safe?
The fledgling period is the avian equivalent of the toddler years β a time of rapid motor development, intense curiosity, and near-total ignorance of danger. Fledglings are fully feathered, beginning to test their wings, and exploring their environment with a beak that goes everywhere. They will sample anything that fits in their mouth: carpet fibers, electrical cords, small hardware, toxic houseplants, and the contents of open trash cans. Unsupervised freedom in a home that has not been bird-proofed is a leading cause of injury and death in young hand-raised parrots (Luescher, 2006).
During this period, the chick should be housed in a secure enclosure β a brooder or a small cage with close bar spacing β when not directly supervised. Perches should be low to the ground and of varying diameters to exercise the feet. The chick is still being hand-fed during the early fledgling period, but solid foods should be introduced: soft vegetables, soaked pellets, and small pieces of fruit placed in shallow dishes. The transition to independent eating is gradual, and a chick that appears to be eating on its own may still be getting most of its calories from hand-feeding. Weaning is complete only when the chick has maintained or gained weight for at least one full week without any supplemental formula (Clubb, 2001).
Fledglings also need social exposure β to different people, gentle handling, novel objects, and the sounds of a normal household β but in measured doses. A chick that is overwhelmed by too much novelty too quickly can become fearful, and fear learned during this sensitive period can persist for life. Short, positive sessions of five to ten minutes, several times a day, are more effective than a single long session.
What should you do if you find an orphaned wild baby bird?
The first step is to determine whether the bird is a nestling or a fledgling. A nestling is unfeathered or sparsely feathered, cannot stand or perch, and has likely fallen from the nest. If the nest is visible and accessible, the nestling should be returned to it β the common belief that parent birds will reject a chick touched by humans is a myth; most songbirds have a poor sense of smell. If the nest cannot be reached, a substitute nest β a small basket or margarine tub lined with dry grass and drainage holes β can be secured as close to the original nest site as possible, and the parents will usually resume feeding within hours (Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 2023).
A fledgling is fully feathered, can hop and perch, and is in the normal process of leaving the nest. Fledglings spend several days on the ground or in low branches while their flight feathers finish growing, and their parents continue to feed them during this period. Unless the bird is visibly injured, in immediate danger from a cat or a road, or has been in the same spot for more than two hours with no sign of a parent, it should be left alone. Removing a healthy fledgling from its parents does more harm than good (USFWS, 2023).
If the bird is genuinely orphaned or injured, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. In the United States, it is illegal under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act for unlicensed individuals to possess most native wild birds. The only exceptions are pigeons, European starlings, and house sparrows β non-native species that are not protected. A wildlife rehabilitator has the permits, training, and facilities to provide species-appropriate care and, when possible, release the bird back into the wild.
When to worry
- Crop not emptying within 4β6 hours of last feeding
- Foul odor from the mouth or crop, or regurgitation of sour-smelling liquid
- Weight loss or failure to gain weight for two consecutive days
- Labored breathing, tail-bobbing, or open-mouth breathing after feeding
- Lethargy, cold to the touch, or refusal to beg for food
- Formula entering the nostrils during feeding
Bottom line
Hand-raising a baby bird is a round-the-clock commitment that demands precision, patience, and a willingness to seek veterinary help at the first sign of trouble. The fundamentals β 10 percent of body weight per feeding, formula at 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, a crop that empties between meals, and a six-hour overnight fast β are not negotiable. For orphaned wild birds, the right move is almost always a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, not a DIY rescue. Done correctly, hand-rearing produces a healthy, well-socialized bird. Done incorrectly, it produces a tragedy that unfolds in hours.
